<p>Few people outside of Edmonton expected the Oilers to go on another deep playoff run, but that doesn't make the sting of losing back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals any less painful for head coach Kris Knoblauch.</p><p>"There's no silver lining to this. It's still heart-wrenching. It's very difficult to handle right now," Knoblauch told reporters after Edmonton's season-ending 5-1 loss Tuesday. "Just because we were maybe the underdogs going into the L.A. series, underdogs against Vegas, Dallas series - it hurts right now and I don't think it's going to let up for a while."</p><p>The Oilers limped into the playoffs with a 16-14-1 record from February onward as they dealt with several injuries down the stretch.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p><a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/3948" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/3948">Leon Draisaitl</a>, who missed Edmonton's final seven games of the regular season, said the pain of losing is equally as bad as it was in 2024.</p><p>"It always hurts," he said. "Not more or less, it's just the same."</p><p>When asked for his takeaway from the series, Draisaitl concluded that there are no moral victories.</p><p>"The takeaway is that we didn't win," he said. "Nobody cares, nobody cares. We didn't win. Try again next year."</p><p>Goaltender <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/6553" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/6553">Stuart Skinner</a> was also gutted after the defeat, saying: "We need to learn from this right away, right now. Letting it happen two times in a row is devastating."</p><p>The Oilers are the third team in the expansion era (since 1968) to lose in back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals, joining the St. Louis Blues (1968-70) and Boston Bruins (1977-78).</p>

Nobody quit. Nobody threw the towel in," McDavid told reporters postgame. "They're a heck of a team. They're Stanley Cup champions back-to-back for a reason."</p><p>The Oilers fell 5-1 in Game 6, and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/11112" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/11112">Vasily Podkolzin</a> scored Edmonton's only goal of the game with 4:22 left in the third period.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>McDavid was held in check in the series, especially when compared to his lofty standards. He registered one goal and six assists in six games.</p><p>"Their forecheck was great. They tilted the rink. They were able to stay on top of us all over the place," McDavid said. "Never really able to generate any momentum up the ice. We kept trying the same thing over and over again, just banging our heads against the wall."</p><p>Despite the result, McDavid's faith in his team hasn't wavered.</p><p>"Still a lot of confidence and belief," McDavid said. "I don't think people thought we were going to make it this far. We obviously believed. Came up just short again."</p><p>McDavid and running mate <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/3948" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/3948">Leon Draisaitl</a> tallied a joint-best 33 points in the playoffs.</p>

The others are the Pittsburgh Penguins (2016-17) and Tampa Bay Lightning (2020-21).</p><p>Florida faced little resistance during its march to a second consecutive Stanley Cup, going 16-7 while outscoring opponents 94-56 in the postseason. The Panthers needed just five games to beat the Tampa Bay Lightning in Round 1 and the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference Final. Only the Toronto Maple Leafs in Round 2 were able to take Florida the distance.</p><p>The Panthers led for 255:49 during the Stanley Cup Final - more than any team in league history.</p><p>The Oilers are the third team in the expansion era (since 1968) to lose in back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals, joining the St. Louis Blues (1968-70) and Boston Bruins (1977-78).</p><p>No Canadian team has won the Stanley Cup since the Montreal Canadiens in 1993. <p>PWHL Vancouver is adding more championship pedigree to its blue line.</p><p>The expansion franchise announced Tuesday it signed defenders <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pwhl/players/15748" href="https://thescore.com/pwhl/players/15748">Mellissa Channell-Watkins</a> to a one-year contract and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pwhl/players/15721" href="https://thescore.com/pwhl/players/15721">Emma Greco</a> to a two-year deal.</p><p>Channell-Watkins spent the last two seasons with back-to-back Walter Cup champion Minnesota Frost. The 30-year-old tallied nine points in 53 regular-season games across the past two campaigns and added one goal and eight assists in 18 appearances over the last two postseasons.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"Mellissa is a proven veteran defender who can play against this league's top talent," PWHL Vancouver general manager Cara Gardner Morey said. "She is a fierce competitor who is not afraid to play physical in all situations."</p><p>Greco, 30, has registered three assists in 50 career regular-season PWHL games. She suited up in 10 playoff contests en route to a Walter Cup with Minnesota in 2024 before spending last season with the Boston Fleet.</p><p>"We are equally thrilled to add another experienced veteran in Emma to our world-class D-corps," Morey said. <p>If there's anyone who knows that draft capital won't make or break a career, it's Prince George Cougars goaltender Joshua Ravensbergen.</p><p>He wasn't picked in the 2021 WHL Bantam Draft that included 24 goalies and 214 total selections. But now Ravensbergen finds himself on the verge of being picked in the first round of the 2025 NHL Draft.</p><p>The native of North Vancouver, British Columbia, could become just the second Canadian goaltender in the last 13 years to hear his name called on Day 1 - which is what many pundits, including <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3296710" href="https://thescore.com/news/3296710">theScore's</a>, are projecting. Sebastian Cossa, who the Detroit Red Wings drafted 15th overall in 2021, is the other first-round netminder.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Ravensbergen told theScore at the NHL Scouting Combine in Buffalo earlier in June that it "would be really, really cool" to join that elusive club. But he knows it's not the be-all and end-all.</p><p>"At the end of the day, it's not really about where you go, and I learned that not being drafted to the (WHL)," he said. "It's what team you go to, then you have to work your way up. At the end of the day, it would be cool, but you have to take into perspective (that) it doesn't really matter as much where you go, it's what you do after."</p><p>Ravensbergen didn't let the WHL draft snub discourage him. Instead, he put in the work to become a top prospect. It also helps that he's grown approximately five inches since then, measuring in at 6-foot-5.25 and 191 pounds at the combine. "He's big. He plays his depth well. He's a confident goalie. He moves really well for his size."</p><p>Ravensbergen posted a 59-17-5 record with a .904 save percentage and six shutouts over his last two seasons with the Cougars. He's gone 11-5-2 with a .916 save percentage and three shutouts in his WHL playoff career.</p><p>"Tougher shooting on him because he's a right-(catching) goalie," Spokane Chiefs forward Owen Martin added. "You don't see that too often."</p><p>Garnering Round 1 status would, fairly or not, create high expectations for Ravensbergen.</p><p>Canada is starved for its next elite netminder. Even though goalies typically take longer to develop than forwards and defensemen, Ravensbergen could offer that hope. The jury is still out on the 22-year-old Cossa, who's coming off back-to-back promising seasons in the AHL but has appeared in just one NHL game.</p><p>There isn't a single active Canadian goalie who's won the Vezina Trophy. The last Vezina winners to hail from Canada - Marc-Andre Fleury in 2021, Braden Holtby in 2016, and Carey Price in 2015 - are all retired.</p><p>Jordan Binnington came up big when needed at the 4 Nations Face-Off, but it's still no secret that this is a dark age in Canadian goaltending.</p><p>Being drafted in Round 1 doesn't guarantee success, of course - especially with goalies. It's the most volatile position in hockey. </p><p>Fewer teams have been willing to roll the dice on goaltenders in Round 1 of the draft in recent years, but even fewer of those goalies have been Canadian. There have been six goalies drafted in Round 1 in the last decade, just one Canadian. </script></figure><p>There are several theories behind Canada's goaltending issue. Canada doesn't have goalie coaches at every single grassroots level like Finland. There are arguments that it doesn't put some of its best athletes in net like Russia. It doesn't have a development program that focuses on process rather than results, like the United States.</p><p>This isn't limited to Canada, but goalie gear in general is more expensive, and harder to get, than skater equipment. Some parents may also be hesitant to commit to lengthy drives for away games or travel tournaments just to see their child serve as the backup.</p><p>Ravensbergen chalks it up to a lack of opportunity in the CHL, a results-driven business. But he believes the new CHL-NCAA transfer agreement should do wonders for netminders.</p><p>"I think a lot of goalies don't hit their prime until later. You're not really given that opportunity with the CHL," he said. "Hopefully that'll change because we're able to go to the NCAA as opposed to playing until 19 and then either going pro or getting cut from junior (as an overager) and going to (a) Canadian college, where chances are much slimmer. It can happen, like with (Logan) Thompson, but it's a lot slimmer. Hopefully, now it can change, give guys more options."</p><p>Ravensbergen, for what it's worth, intends to stay in Prince George next season, much to the disappointment of WHL shooters.</p><p>"He's so hard to get it past," Tri-City Americans defenseman, Penn State commit, and potential top-10 pick Jackson Smith said. "We beat (Prince George) once (in four meetings) this year, and the one time we beat them, he wasn't playing. "Every step I take, I get a little closer, but obviously still a long way to go."</p>

The Edmonton Oilers captain also became the second skater ever to take home the Conn Smythe Trophy despite being on the losing side of the Stanley Cup Final last year.</p><p>McDavid has racked up an NHL-leading 33 points in 21 games so far this postseason, though he may need a little bit of help from above in order to capture his first career Stanley Cup. The Oilers trail the defending champion Florida Panthers 3-2 in the best-of-seven series.</p><p>Jagr won two Stanley Cups during his illustrious 24-year NHL career. His 1,921 points are the second most in league history. The 53-year-old suited up in 39 games with the Kladno Knights - the team he owns - in the Czech Extraliga last season, producing five goals and 11 assists.</p>

<p>The New York Rangers traded veteran winger <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/2542" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/2542">Chris Kreider</a> and a 2025 fourth-round pick to the Anaheim Ducks for forward prospect Carey Terrance and a 2025 third-round pick, the teams announced Thursday.</p><p>The third-rounder was originally owned by the Toronto Maple Leafs. The fourth-rounder is the Ducks' own selection. The Rangers move up 15 spots in the draft as a result of the pick swap.</p><p>It was first reported Tuesday night that the Rangers and Ducks were in advanced discussions about a trade for Kreider. Anaheim was reportedly on Kreider's 15-team no-trade list, but he waived Thursday to approve the deal.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The Ducks are taking on the entirety of Kreider's contract. He's signed for two more years with an average annual value of $6.5 million.</p><p>The 34-year-old battled injuries in 2024-25 and arguably experienced some age-related decline. He recorded 22 goals and eight assists in 68 games, marking his least productive season on a per-game basis since his 23-game debut campaign in 2012-13.</p><p>Kreider, known for his straight-line speed, ferocious forechecking ability, and net-front prowess, potted 39 goals the year prior, 36 goals in 2022-23, and a career-high 52 goals in 2021-22.</p><p>A first-round pick by the Rangers in 2009, Kreider ranks eighth in franchise history in games played (883) and third in goals (326). His 123 playoff games and 48 postseason goals are the most in club history. It's possible his No. 20 will one day hang from the rafters at Madison Square Garden.</p><p>"We want to thank Chris Kreider for all of his contributions to the Rangers organization over his stellar career," Rangers general manager Chris Drury said. "Chris has been an integral part of some of the most iconic moments in Rangers history, including setting multiple franchise records and helping the team advance to the 2014 Stanley Cup Final. </p><p>"His leadership on the ice and tireless efforts in the community - which he was recognized for as the inaugural recipient of the Rod Gilbert 'Mr. Ranger' Award - only add to his distinguished Rangers legacy. Chris will always be a Ranger and we wish him and his family all the best."</p><p>The Rangers, who missed the playoffs a year after winning the Presidents' Trophy, needed to shed salary this offseason. They only had $8.4 million in cap space prior to trading Kreider, and key restricted free agents <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/9235" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/9235">Will Cuylle</a> and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/9103" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/9103">K'Andre Miller</a> are in need of new deals, along with roster holes to fill.</p><p>Kreider was included in a memo that Drury sent to other GMs in November in an effort shake up his team. Captain <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/2912" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/2912">Jacob Trouba</a> was also included in the memo and was eventually dealt to the Ducks as well.</p><p><a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/2191" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/2191">Ryan Strome</a>, another of Kreider's former Rangers teammates, is under contract with the Ducks for two more seasons.</p><p>The Ducks are loaded with cap space following a season in which they enjoyed a 21-point improvement. Even after adding Kreider, they have about $32 million remaining, though pending RFAs <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/10696" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/10696">Mason McTavish</a> and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/9753" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/9753">Lukas Dostal</a> are in line for significant pay raises.</p><p>"Chris Kreider is the type of player we were looking to add this offseason," Ducks GM Pat Verbeek said. "He has size, speed, and is a clutch performer that elevates his game in big moments. Chris also upgrades both of our special teams units, something we really needed to address."</p><p>Anaheim selected Terrance in the second round in 2023. The 20-year-old center produced 20 goals and 19 assists in 45 games with the OHL's Erie Otters last season. He hails from Akwesasne, New York - about a six-hour drive north of Manhattan. Terrance won a gold medal with the United States at the 2025 World Junior Championship, contributing two goals in seven games.</p>

The 26-year-old also became the ninth defenseman ever, and just the second in the last 30 years, to score 30 goals in a campaign.</p><p>Since winning the Calder Trophy in his 2019-20 rookie season, Makar has never finished worse than third in Norris Trophy voting. "You're just trying to finish and close out a game, and that's what we did."</p><p>Edmonton racked up 85 penalty minutes compared to Florida's 55. It's unclear if Marner was asked to waive his no-movement clause. It was reported after the deadline that Marner refused to waive his NMC for a separate deal that would've sent him to Carolina in exchange for Rantanen.</p><p>The Hurricanes eventually flipped Rantanen to the Dallas Stars for a package including <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/10707" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/10707">Logan Stankoven</a> and two first-rounders. Rantanen signed an eight-year, $96-million extension to stay in Dallas.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The Maple Leafs also spoke with the Golden Knights last offseason about a Marner trade, according to <a href="https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/maple-leafs-talked-about-marner-trade-with-golden-knights/">Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman</a>. However, Toronto was apparently rejected when it asked for defenseman <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/3232" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/3232">Shea Theodore</a> in return, who signed a seven-year, $52-million extension with the Golden Knights in October 2024. It's also unclear if Marner was willing to waive his NMC at that point.</p><p>Marner is set to hit unrestricted free agency on July 1, and it's widely expected that he'll sign elsewhere following a nine-year run for his hometown team. While Marner was highly productive in the regular season during his time in Toronto - including a career-high 102 points this past campaign - he's been criticized for failing to step up in the postseason. The Maple Leafs own the NHL's longest playoff streak at nine seasons, but have only two series victories in that span.</p><p>The 28-year-old is No. 1 on <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3290183" href="https://thescore.com/news/3290183">theScore's list</a> of the top pending unrestricted free agents this offseason. </p><p>The Hurricanes and Golden Knights are among the teams that could pursue Marner when he hits the open market. <p>Miami Dolphins cornerback <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/74546" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/74546">Jalen Ramsey</a> is not planning to attend mandatory minicamp this week as the two sides continue to work toward a trade, sources told <a href="https://x.com/RapSheet/status/1931751013804912944">NFL Network's Ian Rapoport</a>.</p><p>The Dolphins have been shopping the former All-Pro since April, but no trade has come to fruition. They signed him to a three-year extension worth up to $72.3 million that made him the NFL's highest-paid corner last September. <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/161662" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/161662">Jaycee Horn</a> and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/173988" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/173988">Derek Stingley</a> have since signed deals that surpassed Ramsey in both average annual value and total money.</p><p>Miami already paid a $4-million roster bonus in Ramsey's contract this year, so any acquiring team would only have to pay him $21.1 million.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Ramsey recorded two interceptions, 11 pass breakups, and 60 tackles in 17 games with the Dolphins this past season. It was his first healthy campaign since his rookie season that didn't result in a Pro-Bowl nod. His 76.9 PFF grade ranked 16th among 222 cornerbacks.</p><p>The 30-year-old has made seven Pro Bowls and three first-team All-Pros across a nine-year career that's included stints with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Los Angeles Rams, and Dolphins. <p>The Pittsburgh Penguins announced Wednesday they hired Dan Muse as the 23rd head coach in franchise history.</p><p>Muse worked as an assistant coach for the New York Rangers under Peter Laviolette the past two campaigns. He was also an assistant under Laviolette with the Nashville Predators for three seasons from 2017-2020. </p><p>Additionally, Muse served as head coach of the USHL's Chicago Steel from 2015-17 and the U.S. National Team Development Program from 2020-23.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Muse replaces Mike Sullivan, who, coincidentally, replaced Laviolette as head coach of the Rangers this offseason following a 10-year run in Pittsburgh.</p><p>"What separated Dan was his ability to develop players, win at all levels where he has been a head coach, and his consistent success coaching special teams in the NHL," Penguins president of hockey operations and general manager Kyle Dubas said. </p><p>"From his success in developing college and junior players, to his impactful work with veteran players during his time in the NHL, Dan has shown a proven ability to connect with players at all stages of their careers and help them to reach their potential."</p><p>Muse was in charge of running the penalty kill during his time as an assistant in Nashville and New York. The Predators ranked 13th in the league on the penalty kill in his three seasons. The Rangers ranked fourth shorthanded under Muse the last two campaigns.</p><p>The Predators (2018) and Rangers (2024) both won a Presidents' Trophy with Muse as an assistant.</p><p>As a head coach, Muse won a gold medal for the USA at the 2023 Under-18s and a 2017 championship with the Steel.</p><p>The 42-year-old hails from Canton, Massachusetts.</p>
