<p>The Florida Panthers are in the midst of celebrating their second straight Stanley Cup victory, but general manager Bill Zito must soon turn his attention to a trio of pending unrestricted free agents. </p><p>Conn Smythe Trophy winner <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/3949" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/3949">Sam Bennett</a>, resurgent veteran forward <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/100" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/100">Brad Marchand</a>, and key defenseman <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/3946" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/3946">Aaron Ekblad</a> can all hit the open market on July 1, but Zito is confident he can keep the band together despite only having $19 million in cap space.</p><p>"I think we can bring them all back," he told <a href="https://www.tsn.ca/nhl/video/i-think-we-can-bring-them-all-back-zito-on-re-signing-marchand-bennett-and-ekblad~3153592">TSN's James Duthie</a> as his team celebrated on the ice behind him. </p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>When asked if it'd require them to take sizeable hometown discounts, Zito played coy. </p><p>"Let's just leave it at that," he said with a smile. </p><p>Luckily for Zito, all three players seem motivated to stay in Sunrise. </p><p>"It's a huge honor to be a part of this group," Bennett told the media, including <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29yiyidO1B0">Florida Hockey Now</a>. "I am not gonna take it for granted, I love being here, and I love this team. It's a remarkable team to be a part of. ... Truly everyone is world-class here."</p><p>He added, "My whole life switched when I got traded here (in 2021) and I'm super grateful to be here." </p><p>Bennett is due for a sizeable raise on his $4.425-million cap hit after leading the league with a whopping 15 goals - 13 of which came on the road - in these playoffs. </p><p>He also recorded a career-high 51 points in the regular season. </p><p>As for Marchand, he <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3297663" href="https://thescore.com/news/3297663">said</a> before Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final that he'd "thought about" extending in Florida, though he was mostly focused on the Cats' playoff run. </p><p>Marchand erupted with six goals in six games against the Oilers and was <a href="https://www.thephwa.com/2025/06/18/road-warrior-sam-bennett-narrowly-topped-brad-marchand-for-conn-smythe-trophy/">narrowly beaten</a> by Bennett for the Conn Smythe Trophy. Florida pried him away from the Boston Bruins at the trade deadline.</p><p>When asked how badly he wanted to keep Marchand, Zito referenced the winger's love of ice cream - <a href="https://apnews.com/article/panthers-brad-marchand-ice-cream-4764bf6193544bc8440dfd8c60e59381">specifically Blizzards</a>. </p><p>"I bought a Dairy Queen," the executive said, per <a href="https://x.com/lukefoxjukebox/status/1935184713477669028">Sportsnet's Luke Fox</a>.</p><p>Ekblad, meanwhile, has spent his entire career with the Panthers after being selected by the team with the first overall pick in the 2014 NHL Draft. </p><p>When asked if he just played his final home game as a Panther, the blue-liner responded, "I sure hope not." </p><p>"I don't know what's gonna happen," he continued, per <a href="https://x.com/lukefoxjukebox/status/1935189787285274788">Fox</a>. "I'm not in much control of that at the moment. To live in the moment is most important for me. When the time comes, I'm sure those tough conversations will be had."</p><p>Veteran rearguard <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/2910" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/2910">Nate Schmidt</a> is also set to become an unrestricted free agent. He appeared in 80 games for the Panthers in the regular season before going off for 12 points, including five against Edmonton, in 23 playoff games.</p><p>In addition, forward <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/10633" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/10633">Mackie Samoskevich</a> is in need of a new contract as a restricted free agent. </p>

"Wherever it is."</p><p>McDavid's Oilers have now lost to Tkachuk's Panthers in back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals. </p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The Edmonton superstar won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the postseason MVP last spring, becoming just the second skater to take home the hardware as a member of the losing side. McDavid recorded three goals and 11 points in seven games versus Florida last spring, but he was quieter this time around, recording one goal and six assists as the Oilers fell in six contests.</p><p>McDavid <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3301386" href="https://thescore.com/news/3301386">made it clear</a> he still has "a lot of confidence and belief" in his club despite another heartbreaking loss, adding that "nobody quit" during Edmonton's season-ending, 5-1 thrashing in Game 6.</p><p>The 28-year-old has won five Art Ross Trophies, four Ted Lindsay Awards, three Hart Memorial Trophies, and one Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy during his 10-year NHL tenure. McDavid leads the league with a whopping 721 assists and 1,082 points in 712 regular-season games since his debut campaign in 2015-16.</p><p>Edmonton has made the playoffs seven times with McDavid in tow, winning 10 series over that stretch. He already ranks fourth in the franchise's record books in postseason assists (106) and fifth in points (150) in 96 games played.</p><p>McDavid is eligible to sign a new extension with the Oilers on July 1. His former agent, Jeff Jackson, was hired as Edmonton's CEO of hockey operations in August 2023.</p><p>Tkachuk, meanwhile, is grateful for the trade that sent him from the Calgary Flames to Sunrise almost three years ago.</p><p>"I can't believe that this is what's happened in the last few years," Tkachuk told <a href="https://x.com/NHL_On_TNT/status/1935176612401582465">TNT's Darren Pang</a>. "Coming to Florida was one of the greatest things that's ever happened to me."</p><p>He added, "To do this back-to-back times, go to three straight Finals, win two of them, I mean, we're a dynasty. ... Hopefully we can do it again."</p><p>Tkachuk is under contract for five more seasons with a cap hit of $9.5 million. He can become an unrestricted free agent in 2030 at the age of 32. </p><p>It was a trying postseason for Tkachuk, who <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3301377" href="https://thescore.com/news/3301377">revealed</a> that he tore his adductor off the bone and dealt with a hernia after getting injured at the 4 Nations Face-Off. </p>

She also finished second in the league with three shootout goals. </p><p>"We're incredibly excited to announce that Susanna Tapani is remaining a part of the Fleet. This was a priority signing for us," general manager Danielle Marmer said in a <a href="https://www.thepwhl.com/en/teams/boston-fleet/news/2025/june/17/fleet-announce-contract-extension-for-susanna-tapani">statement</a>. "Susanna is a highly productive, two-way center who consistently impacts every time she touches the ice. Her speed, ability to possess, and finish set her apart as being one of the best players in this league."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Minnesota selected Tapani in the fifth round of the inaugural PWHL draft in 2023. There's not much time in this league - especially in the finals - to sulk on it and feel bad for yourself."</p><p>Edmonton superstar <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/3948" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/3948">Leon Draisaitl</a> knows his team will need a better start Tuesday to lessen the pressure on Skinner and extend its season. She spent three seasons with the Toronto Six in the Premier Hockey Federation and was named the league's Goaltender of the Year in 2021-22. Chuli also helped the club win the Isobel Cup in 2022-23.</p><p>"I couldn't be more excited to be coming home to Toronto and joining the Sceptres for next season," Chuli said in a statement. "It means a lot to me to be back close to home and have the chance to play in front of such a passionate fan base. <p>Florida Panthers star <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/5591" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/5591">Matthew Tkachuk</a> lifted the lid Monday on the injury that sidelined him before the start of the postseason, saying he was "very lucky" to suit up for these playoffs.</p><p>"I didn't know if I was gonna come back at the start," he told the media, including <a href="https://x.com/Sportsnet/status/1934669463447580918">Sportsnet</a>. "I kinda found out the day before (the playoffs) that I was gonna have a chance to play - the day of, honestly."</p><p>He added, "I thought there was maybe a 50% chance I wouldn't be playing about a week or five days before playoffs. I'm very lucky and fortunate that I've got great trainers and doctors. They all somehow got me healthy enough to play." </p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Tkachuk missed the last 25 games of the regular season after suffering a lower-body injury at the 4 Nations Face-Off in February. He sat out of the United States' round-robin game against Sweden and was limited to just under seven minutes of ice time when he returned to the lineup for the final versus Canada.</p><p>Panthers general manager Bill Zito <a href="https://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/3232112">said</a> in March that he hoped Tkachuk would be able to return for the postseason, and the hard-nosed forward was ready for Game 1 against the Tampa Bay Lightning. </p><p>He made an instant impact in Florida's playoff opener, tallying two goals and an assist, and ranked second on the team with five points in the series as the Panthers eliminated the Bolts in five games. However, Tkachuk admitted he wasn't at his best.</p><p>"The first round was definitely the worst I felt by far," he said. "Just knowing that was gonna be - other than this round (against the Edmonton Oilers) - our toughest round, playing Tampa. So I knew that even at nowhere close to what I expect out of myself, I needed to help out as best I (could) if we were gonna get by them. I was proud of myself and happy for playing that round." </p><p>Tkachuk went on to record four assists against the Toronto Maple Leafs before logging seven points in the Eastern Conference Final versus the Carolina Hurricanes. </p><p>He's since been a thorn in the side of the Oilers in the Stanley Cup Final with two goals and six points in five outings, and Tkachuk thinks he's at the top of his game with the Panthers one win away from repeating as champions.</p><p>"I've had some ups and downs throughout the playoffs and now I'm feeling the best I've felt," he said. "Personally, I'm very happy with where (my) health is."</p><p>Game 6 is scheduled for Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET in Sunrise. </p>

<p>The Pittsburgh Penguins aren't expected to offer franchise icon <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/1026" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/1026">Evgeni Malkin</a> another contract once his current one expires at the end of the 2025-26 campaign, sources told <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6411170/2025/06/16/penguins-evgeni-malkin-retirement-nhl/?source=emp_shared_article">The Athletic's Josh Yohe</a>.</p><p>Yohe added it isn't clear if Malkin plans to retire after next season, which will be his 20th in the NHL. The veteran forward has made it clear on multiple occasions he only wants to play for the Penguins. He said in February he'll finish his career in Pittsburgh.</p><p>Malkin signed a four-year pact with a $6.10-million cap hit in July 2022 amid rumors he was going to test the free-agent market. Malkin reportedly told his teammates at the time that the Penguins - then run by president of hockey operations Brian Burke and general manager Ron Hextall - thought he wasn't "good anymore."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The future Hall of Famer ranks second in Pittsburgh's record books in games played (1,213) and third in goals (514), assists (832), and points (1,346) during the regular season.</p><p>He also sits second in points (180), assists (113), and game-winning goals (13) in 177 career playoff games while winning three Stanley Cups (2009, 2016, 2017).</p><p>Malkin has hit the 100-point mark on three occasions, most recently in 2011-12 when he scored 50 goals for the first and only time. He reached the 40-goal plateau on two other instances, including in 2017-18.</p><p>The 38-year-old recorded 16 goals and 50 points in 68 outings this past season and was on pace for 19 tallies and 60 points over a full 82 games. Malkin scored 27 goals in each of the previous two campaigns.</p><p>The Penguins have missed the playoffs for three straight years and fell short by 11 points in 2024-25. Pittsburgh finished the season seventh in the Metropolitan Division with a 34-36-12 record.</p>

<p>Edmonton Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch still isn't sure who he's going to turn to between the pipes for his club's must-win Game 6 on Tuesday.</p><p>"That's a conversation with the staff, obviously our goaltending coach Dustin Schwartz, but with all the assistants, general manager (Stan Bowman), to kind of weigh in with how everyone feels and what's best moving forward," he <a href="https://www.nhl.com/oilers/video/raw-kris-knoblauch-06-15-25-6374319365112">said</a> Sunday.</p><p>"And it's not an easy decision. We've got two goalies that have shown that they can play extremely well, win hockey games. We feel that no matter who we choose, they can win the game."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Knoblauch noted that the Oilers need to have a better start regardless of who's in net. The Florida Panthers have outscored Edmonton 7-0 in the first period over the past three games. </p><p>"Absolutely, (it'd help) when the pressure's not on them that they have to make every single save to keep this close or keep us ahead," he said. "It'd be nice to get some goal support." </p><p><a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/6553" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/6553">Stuart Skinner</a> started the first four contests of the Stanley Cup Final, but he was pulled in Games 3 and 4. He was given the hook on Monday early in the third period after allowing five goals on 23 shots, and he was yanked on Thursday after Florida scored three times on 17 shots in the opening frame.</p><p>Knoblauch didn't blame Skinner for <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3298492" href="https://thescore.com/news/3298492">either</a> <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3299650" href="https://thescore.com/news/3299650">performance</a>, but he gave <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/1766" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/1766">Calvin Pickard</a> the start in Game 5 after he made 22 saves on 23 shots en route to Edmonton's wild 5-4 overtime win in the previous contest.</p><p>Pickard surrendered four goals on 18 shots Saturday for a .778 save percentage and 4.21 goals against average during his first loss of these playoffs. Knoblauch defended him after the defeat, which put the Oilers down 2-3 in the Stanley Cup Final. </p><p>"From what I saw, I think Picks didn't have much chance on those goals," he <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3300293" href="https://thescore.com/news/3300293">said</a>. "Breakaways, shots through screens, slot shots. Canucks center <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/14013" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/14013">Ty Mueller</a> won the draw cleanly and accidentally fired the puck into his own net. "So they deemed that the goalie wasn't ready."</p><p>He added, "I thought it was a goal, and then all of a sudden there was hesitation from the refs. Credit to them, they got together and they made the call. I just see it as the centerman's responsible for making sure everyone on his team is ready. He looked like he was ready to me."</p><p>Checkers defenseman Trevor Carrick also found himself feeling bamboozled.</p><p>"It was a weird play," he said, per <a href="https://x.com/CamGaskinsTV/status/1933738751840178303">WBTV News' Cam Gaskins</a>. "I don't really know what was going on. ... I don't really know the ruling there. I thought we had the win there, but apparently not."</p><p>The rearguard continued, "It's tough. I mean, I was kind of looking at the refs right away, and they were huddled up. ... I tried not to get too fired up, but obviously the guys were pretty amped up. It was a long game. We were looking forward to finishing that off."</p><p><a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/10766" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/10766">Danila Klimovich</a> scored on the power play around seven minutes later to secure the 4-3 victory for Abbotsford. The Canucks were down 3-2 entering the third period, but Mueller buried the equalizer to extend the contest. </p><p>Kinnear thought the Checkers did a solid job of putting the waved-off goal behind them and was more concerned about his club's struggles on the power play.</p><p>"It is what it is. It's playoff hockey. There's gonna be mistakes both ways," he said. "You can't get too high, too low. You just move on. I thought we responded well. I thought we came out, had some chances, but in the end, you look at the scoresheet, it's 2-for-7 (for Abbotsford on the power play), 0-for-5 (for Charlotte)."</p><p>The Checkers failed to convert on two power-play chances in the first overtime period. </p><p>Abbotsford is the AHL affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks, while Charlotte is the minor-league team of the Florida Panthers. </p><p>Game 2 is scheduled for Sunday at 4 p.m. ET. </p><p> </p>

"This is Christmas. This is the payoff. You want to be a good pro, but Tuesday on the road on the West Coast in November, not as much fun as you'd think. This is where you get the payback. ... This is truly the juice that you live for."</p><p>The series certainly hasn't lacked thrills through the first four contests.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Games 1 and 2 were decided in overtime, with <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/3948" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/3948">Leon Draisaitl</a> scoring the winner in the former and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/100" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/100">Brad Marchand</a> tying the series in the second extra frame in the latter. </p><p>The Panthers made it two straight wins with a 6-1 rout in Game 3 and looked like they'd be taking a 3-1 stranglehold on the Stanley Cup Final after jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first period of Game 4. </p><p>However, the Oilers rattled off four straight goals to put Florida on the back foot. <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/3945" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/3945">Sam Reinhart</a> scored the equalizer with 20 seconds left, but Draisaitl secured Edmonton's 5-4 victory, once again in overtime.</p><p>Reinhart's late tally wasn't even the matchup's first last-gasp equalizer: <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/34" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/34">Corey Perry</a> scored the latest tying goal in Stanley Cup Final history with 18 seconds left in Game 2.</p><p>"You kind of ride that wave," Reinhart <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5piskqcyuY">said</a> of dealing with the momentum swings. "It's an emotional grind. That's part of it, that makes it so sweet when you win it. "Every board battle, everything can turn into something so there's a tension because both teams can score. From my point of view, there's been phenomenal goaltending in this series. The numbers are telling me I'm lying, the final score says I'm lying. ... Everything is dangerous all the time. </p><p>"There's a mental intensity, mental toughness I think both teams show. ... You get three of four games of a final into overtime, you've got two really good, evenly matched teams." </p><p>This is the third Stanley Cup Final in NHL history where both teams have combined for seven or more goals in each of the first four games, following 1980 and 1918, per <a href="https://media.nhl.com/public/live-updates?date=2025-06-12">NHL PR</a>. </p><p>The Panthers will look to take a 3-2 series edge in Edmonton. He's also the second rookie blue-liner to reach the 60-assist plateau, joining Murphy, who accomplished the feat in 1980-81.</p><p>His stats were enough to propel him to the top of some of Montreal's record books. "It would have been nice to make (the eagle), but hey, I'll take it."</p><p>Fox's first career PGA TOUR victory at the ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic in May also came via a playoff against <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pga/players/2720" href="https://thescore.com/pga/players/2720">Harry Higgs</a> and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pga/players/1056" href="https://thescore.com/pga/players/1056">Mackenzie Hughes</a>, though it was decided on the first hole. </p><p>The 38-year-old has two wins in his last four starts, and he said the lessons he learned from his first victory helped pave the way for his Canadian Open triumph.</p><p>"This one felt a little less nerve-racking," Fox told <a href="https://www.tsn.ca/golf/video/still-a-bit-surreal-to-be-honest-fox-breaks-down-dramatic-playoff-at-canadian-open~3148784">TSN's Bob Weeks</a>. "You're still nervous, but it just felt like it didn't quite matter as much. I know that it's kind of a bad thing to say, but the bad shots don't matter as much after winning. You get a bit of confidence and security and everything - that means a lot out on TOUR.</p><p>"I felt like, coming down those last few holes, I could really give it a go and try to win the golf tournament rather than worry about hanging onto a third for some FedEx Cup points or anything like that. It's a great way to play golf. I wish I could've figured it out a little earlier out here, but it's nice to get a couple wins in the last month, that's for sure." </p><p>Fox recorded just one birdie on his front nine Sunday but found another gear with three birdies in his last five holes - including a 17-foot putt on No. 18 to force the playoff.</p><p>The New Zealander qualified for next week's U.S. Open with the win. </p><p>"It's still a bit surreal, to be honest," Fox said. </p><p>He added, "I felt like my golf game's in good shape. If I gave myself chances down the stretch, anything could happen, and it did." </p>

"Had a chance going into Sunday, so I feel like that's a positive. Today, yeah, I didn't feel - I wasn't feeling great. Kind of battling some stomach stuff and just never really felt myself out there. Didn't have an appetite to eat much.</p><p>"That was disappointing to have that on my plate today, but no excuse really. I still was able to walk and swing a club. ... I was kind of out of it after the first nine. Disappointing, but lots of positives still."</p><p>Despite a double-bogey on No. 17, Taylor said he's feeling "really good" about his game with the U.S. Open next week.</p><p>"I drove it awesome today," he said, per <a href="https://www.tsn.ca/golf/ryan-fox-knocks-off-sam-burns-in-playoff-to-win-rbc-canadian-open-1.2318731">TSN</a>. <p>Though <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/100" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/100">Brad Marchand</a> remains focused on winning a Stanley Cup with the Panthers, he admitted he's pictured what it'd be like to re-sign in Florida as an unrestricted free agent.</p><p>"I mean, yeah, I've thought about it," Marchand told the media Sunday, including <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4RI4QzAgGg">Florida Hockey Now</a>. "But we'll deal with that in the future."</p><p>The veteran winger added, "The longest you can go (in the Stanley Cup Final) is two weeks, so you're in the moment that entire time. You can't have your mind in any other place other than right here and now. </p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"I've said it so often during this run, you have to enjoy these moments. They don't come often. There's no other thought in my mind right now."</p><p>Marchand is playing out the final season of an eight-year pact with a team-friendly $6.13-million cap hit, which he signed with the Boston Bruins in September 2016.</p><p>The Panthers acquired Marchand from Boston in a jaw-dropping trade at this year's deadline in exchange for a conditional 2027 second-round pick.
