<p>Florida Panthers forward <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/5591" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/5591">Matthew Tkachuk</a> revealed the significant injuries he was playing through after his team's Stanley Cup triumph Tuesday.</p><p>"I tore my adductor off the bone and had some hernia thing, all on the same side," Tkachuk, who was hurt playing at the 4 Nations Face-Off in February, told <a href="https://x.com/NHL_On_TNT/status/1935176612401582465">TNT's Darren Pang</a>. "Wanted to throw in the towel a bunch of times. I gotta thank a lot of people for getting me healthy enough. I'm sure I wasn't the easiest to deal with. ... I really didn't think I would be playing, or at least playing to my capabilities. The longer the playoffs went, the better I felt."</p><p>Tkachuk played under seven minutes in the championship game of the 4 Nations Face-Off versus Canada after sitting out the United States' round-robin game against Sweden. He then missed the last 25 games of the regular season while recovering from the injury.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The 27-year-old returned for Game 1 of the first round versus the Tampa Bay Lightning and tallied two goals and three points in his first contest back. Tkachuk finished the postseason with eight goals and 23 points in all 23 of Florida's games, including seven points in the six-game Cup Final versus the Edmonton Oilers.</p><p>It's Tkachuk and Florida's second straight Stanley Cup.</p><p>"This one's more rewarding to me, just with everything personally I had to overcome," Tkachuk said. "I didn't know if I was going to be playing. It just shows how unbelievable our group is, the depth, everything, to allow me to get my footing throughout the playoffs.</p><p>"I owe a lot of people a lot of thank yous. Doctors, medical team, our trainers, equipment guys, all the support staff that don't get a lot of credit. I would not be here without them, and I owe them this one."</p><p>Tkachuk wasn't the only Panther who dealt with a gruelling injury in these playoffs. Head coach Paul Maurice revealed that captain <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/3004" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/3004">Aleksander Barkov</a> split the palm of his hand open in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final, while star forward <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/3945" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/3945">Sam Reinhart</a> missed time in the Eastern Conference Final due to a Grade 2 MCL sprain, per <a href="https://apnews.com/article/stanley-cup-panthers-injuries-9a6ae27eb3daa0f175f5d67187bc3a7d">The Associated Press' Stephen Whyno and Alanis Thames</a>. </p>

<p>Florida Panthers forward <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/3949" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/3949">Sam Bennett</a> won the Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs.</p><p>Bennett led the postseason with 15 goals en route to the Panthers' second straight Stanley Cup triumph. He added seven assists to finish the 23-game run with 22 points. He also had 48 penalty minutes.</p><p>The 28-year-old notched five goals and six points in the Cup Final versus the Edmonton Oilers. Bennett tallied a goal in five of his last seven games.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"This is way harder than I thought it would be to win," Bennett said postgame. "And to win twice, we put in so much work for this. I'm so proud of this group. It's incredible the team we have here. I'm so proud of all the guys. It's the best feeling in the world. I don't know how else to describe it."</p><p>Bennett scored more goals this year than he had total points (14) when Florida won the Cup in 2024. He drew praise from his teammates after being named playoff MVP.</p><p>“Everyone looks at the goals, and rightfully so, but it's everything he does, even away from the puck," Panthers defenseman <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/3005" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/3005">Seth Jones</a> said, according to The Associated Press. “His physical presence out there, his 200-foot game, the way he plays away from the puck defensively, how he is on face-offs, I think it's the complete package we're lucky to have. It's been a big part of our success. He puts a lot of teams, a lot of defensemen, on their heels out there."</p><p>Florida's head coach, Paul Maurice, succinctly described Bennett's game: "Physical player, incredible speed, and then the hands to finish," Maurice said, according to The Associated Press.</p><p>Bennett is set to become an unrestricted free agent July 1.</p><p>Oilers superstar <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/4560" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/4560">Connor McDavid</a> won the Conn Smythe last year in a losing effort when Florida won their first Stanley Cup.</p>

She entered the series in Game 2 and made 105 saves on 108 shots, allowing just one goal in each contest as the Frost captured their second straight Walter Cup. Rooney went 5-0-0 in the postseason overall.</p><p>The Minnesota native posted a .907 save percentage and a 2.07 goals-against average in 19 appearances during the regular season.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"Maddie has again and again proven herself to be an elite goaltender in the PWHL," Frost general manager Melissa Caruso <a href="https://www.thepwhl.com/en/news/2025/june/17/minnesota-frost-sign-goaltender-maddie-rooney-to-a-three-year-contract">said</a>. "She consistently makes big saves in critical moments, and she plays the net with an incredible level of focus. She ranked 21st in shots on goal with 56, and her 1.8% shooting percentage was last among players with at least one goal.</p><p>The Buffalo native still made Team USA at the World Championship despite struggling offensively and notched two goals and three points in seven games en route to winning gold. <p>With the Stanley Cup Final in danger of slipping away, Edmonton Oilers veteran <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/34" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/34">Corey Perry</a> stepped up to address his teammates during the first intermission. </p><p>His words made a big impact and helped spark the team's three-goal second-period comeback in Thursday night's <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3299555" href="https://thescore.com/news/3299555">Game 4</a> overtime victory over the Florida Panthers, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/3948" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/3948">Leon Draisaitl</a> told reporters postgame.</p><p>"We wanted to come out strong tonight, but they put us on our heels early," Draisaitl <a href="https://www.nhl.com/oilers/video/post-raw-draisaitl-pickard-06-12-25-6374217142112">said</a>. "We were kinda lollygagging around a little bit. Certainly not the time to lollygag around, right? Especially after getting spanked in Game 3.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"Corey spoke up. When he speaks up, you listen, and you do what he says. We did a great job of grabbing it, grabbing some momentum and keeping it."</p><p>The Oilers trailed 3-0 after the first period and were outshot 17-7 through 20 minutes. Edmonton battled back in the second with three goals to tie the game, and ultimately won 5-4 in overtime.</p><p>"I'm not gonna share exactly what he said right now, but the message is that he's been in these moments. He's not a guy that speaks up or yells at guys all the time, that's not his character," Draisaitl said. "So, you know when a guy like that, with that many games, that much experience - he's won everything there is to win, he knows how to win - when he speaks up, you listen. It grabs your attention. He's a heck of a leader."</p><p>Perry has turned back the clock during the playoffs. The 40-year-old has nine goals and 13 points in 20 games and is tied for third in playoff goals. It's the second-most goals he's scored in a postseason in his career.</p><p>Perry won the Stanley Cup in his second season with the Anaheim Ducks back in 2007. He's since gone to five more Cup Finals from 2020-22, and 2024-25, and is looking for an elusive second Stanley Cup.</p><p>The Oilers are the first road team to overcome a 3-0 deficit and win a game in the championship round since the Montreal Canadiens won Game 5 of the 1919 Stanley Cup Final against the Seattle Metropolitans, according to <a href="https://x.com/SNstats/status/1933345946886132090">Sportsnet Stats</a>.</p><p>Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final goes Saturday night in Edmonton.</p>

<p>Winnipeg Jets goaltender <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/3997" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/3997">Connor Hellebuyck</a> won the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP and the Vezina Trophy as the best goaltender, the league announced Thursday.</p><p>Hellebuyck is the first American netminder and the eighth goaltender to be named MVP. Carey Price was the most recent goalie to win both awards in one season (2015). Hellebuyck is the first player in Jets/Atlanta Thrashers franchise history to win the Hart.</p><p>The 32-year-old posted a .925 save percentage and a 2.00 goals-against average in 63 games this season. He went 47-12-3, leading the Jets to their first Presidents' Trophy. He became the seventh goalie to record 45 or more wins in a season and the first since Braden Holtby in 2016.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Hellebuyck won his second consecutive Vezina Trophy and the third of his career. He received 31 of 32 first-place votes from general managers.</p><p>No goalie had won back-to-back Vezinas since Martin Brodeur in 2007 and 2008, and Hellebuyck is only the 13th netminder to win on three occasions. All but one of the goalies in the exclusive club are enshrined in the Hall of Fame.</p><p>Hellebuyck joins Dominik Hasek (six), Brodeur (four), and Patrick Roy (three) as the only goalies to win the Vezina at least three times since the league changed the voting process prior to the 1981-82 season. <p>The Forsyth County Commission approved agreements for a $3-billion project that includes construction of an NHL-ready arena.</p><p>The vote Wednesday clears a major hurdle for the CEO of Krause Sports and Entertainment, Vernon Krause, who is eyeing an NHL expansion franchise in the Atlanta area.</p><p>"This vote marks a pivotal moment," Krause said, according to <a href="https://www.fox5atlanta.com/news/gathering-south-forsyth-nhl-team-development-meeting">Fox 5 Atlanta</a>. "We can go to (NHL commissioner Gary Bettman) and ask him to start a process (for expansion), which we're hopeful he will do."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The NHL has had two franchises in Atlanta, and both relocated. The Thrashers joined the league in 1999 and played in Atlanta for 11 seasons before becoming the Winnipeg Jets. Atlanta also had the Flames from 1972-80 before moving to Calgary. Atlanta is the only city in the NHL's modern history to have two teams relocate to different locations.</p><p>"We’re closer than we’ve ever been to bringing NHL hockey back to our region," Krause said, according to Fox 5 Atlanta.</p><p>Krause already owns the land where the project would be constructed. Forsyth County is a little more than 40 miles outside of Atlanta. Krause confirmed the project will be built only if Atlanta is awarded an expansion franchise, according to Fox 5 Atlanta.</p><p>Bettman has said he doesn't believe past failures in Atlanta reflect on the league's future decision regarding a third expansion team in the city.</p><p>"It's a different place than when the Flames and the Thrashers left, in terms of how big the city is, how robust it is, the sporting interest," Bettman said in May, according to <a href="https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/third-times-a-charm-bettman-discusses-possible-atlanta-expansion/">Sportsnet's Luke Fox</a>. "I don't think the prior two visits have any bearing on whether or not we would go back, if all the other pieces that are referred to were to be put together."</p><p>The NHL has expanded twice in recent history. The Vegas Golden Knights were added in 2017, and the Seattle Kraken joined the league in 2021. The Arizona Coyotes relocated to Utah before last season.</p><p>The league currently stands at 32 teams, which is tied with the NFL for the most among major professional North American leagues.</p>

He averaged 18:15 during the regular season but just 11:08 in the postseason. He notched two goals and three points in six playoff contests.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The 5-foot-9 pivot is set to become a restricted free agent July 1.</p><p>Rossi established himself as an NHL regular in 2023-24 when he totaled 21 goals and 40 points and finished sixth in Calder Trophy voting. <p>PWHL Vancouver selected defender <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pwhl/players/15825" href="https://thescore.com/pwhl/players/15825">Ashton Bell</a> from the Ottawa Charge with the first pick in the league's expansion draft Monday.</p><p>Vancouver chose to pick first after winning a lottery conducted by PWHL executive vice president of hockey operations Jayna Hefford earlier Monday.</p><p>Bell recorded three goals and six points in 27 regular-season games and was a key piece of Ottawa's top-pairing as the Charge reached the PWHL Finals. The 25-year-old was taken eighth overall in the 2023 PWHL Draft by Ottawa, which lost in four games to Minnesota the 2025 finals.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>PWHL Seattle selected defender <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pwhl/players/15812" href="https://thescore.com/pwhl/players/15812">Aneta Tejralova</a> and forward <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pwhl/players/15717" href="https://thescore.com/pwhl/players/15717">Hannah Bilka</a> with the second and third picks.</p><p>Tejralova notched one goal and 10 points in 30 contests. The 29-year-old captains Team Czechia internationally, and she was initially selected 41st overall in the first PWHL draft by the Charge.</p><p>Bilka recorded five goals and 11 points in 16 games last season after being selected fourth overall by Boston in last year's draft. <p>Washington Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery won the Jack Adams Award, the NHL announced Saturday.</p><p>Carbery guided the Capitals to a 51-22-9 regular-season record as Washington finished first in the Eastern Conference.</p><p>The 43-year-old is the first to win Coach of the Year in the NHL, AHL, and ECHL. He earned the honor with the AHL's Hershey Bears in 2021 and the ECHL's South Carolina Stingrays in 2014.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Carbery beat Winnipeg Jets' Scott Arniel and Montreal Canadiens' Martin St. Louis for the award.</p><p>While sitting down for what he believed was an end-of-season interview, Carbery's family surprised him with the award.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/8UcUuxx_d2Y?si=Uybi8RqGiq2t7kK6" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></figure><p>Washington enjoyed a 20-point increase in the standings from Carbery's first campaign. <p>Florida Panthers forward <a href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/100">Brad Marchand</a> drew praise from his teammates after a clutch two-goal performance in Friday's Game 2 win over the Edmonton Oilers, capped by the double-overtime winner.</p><p>"He just finds a way," defenseman <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/2910" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/2910">Nate Schmidt</a> said following the Panthers' series-tying victory, according to <a href="https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/45468306/marchand-nets-2ot-winner-panthers-even-stanley-cup-final">ESPN's Greg Wyshynski</a>. "I don't think the moment ever gets too big for him."</p><p>Marchand leads all active players with 10 career goals in the Stanley Cup Final, including three through two games this postseason. His heroics Friday came 14 years to the day after he netted his first Cup Final goal in Game 3 of the 2011 Final versus the Vancouver Canucks.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Roberto Luongo, the Canucks' goaltender in that 2011 series and now a special advisor in Florida's front office, posted on <a href="https://x.com/strombone1/status/1931206201767026801">X</a> following the contest that Marchand is his "favorite player of all time."</p><p>The Panthers acquired Marchand from the Boston Bruins before the trade deadline, ending his 16-year tenure with the Bruins.</p><p>Florida star forward <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/5591" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/5591">Matthew Tkachuk</a> said he believes the 37-year-old veteran shows no signs of slowing down.</p><p>"He could play until he's 47 the way he's going," Tkachuk said, according to <a href="https://www.nhl.com/news/brad-marchand-lifts-florida-panthers-in-game-2-with-2ot-goal?utm_source=nhldotcom&amp;utm_medium=social">NHL.com's Nicholas J. Cotsonika</a>. "Unreal player, unreal competitor, and he's scored, when you think about it, two of our biggest goals in the playoffs so far, so hopefully he can keep it going."</p><p>Tkachuk also lauded Marchand's skill set and intelligence.</p><p>"Playoffs aside, I think his best strength as a player, like he's really skilled, hard on pucks, wants the puck, but his anticipation and his just being in the right spots and his hockey sense, it's unbelievable," Tkachuk said, according to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6409928/2025/06/07/brad-marchand-florida-panthers-game-2-hero/?source=emp_shared_article">The Athletic</a>.</p><p>"You see it tonight, two breakaway goals, just seeing a play, seeing it go to a player, and he's gone and gets an unbelievable chance. I saw that a ton from him in Boston, and it's way better seeing it here."</p><p>Tkachuk added that Florida kept the locker room light despite the Oilers' dramatic tying goal in the final minute of the third period.</p><p>"It was the opposite of what you guys probably thought was going on in the locker room," Tkachuk said, per Cotsonika. "We were upbeat, joking around, picking guys who we thought were going to score. We were having some fun."</p>

<p>Colorado Avalanche forward <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/7850" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/7850">Logan O'Connor</a> underwent successful hip surgery Friday and is expected to miss five-to-six months, the team announced.</p><p>O'Connor tallied 10 goals and 21 points in 80 games this season and was particularly productive in the first round of the playoffs, notching two goals and six points in the Avalanche's seven-game defeat at the hands of the Dallas Stars.</p><p>The Texas native also required season-ending hip surgery in March 2024, forcing him to miss last year's postseason.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>O'Connor signed a six-year contract extension with a $2.5-million cap hit in September. That deal begins in the 2025-26 campaign.</p><p>The Avalanche signed O'Connor as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Denver in 2018. He's accumulated 45 goals and 103 points in 343 appearances over parts of seven seasons in Colorado.</p>

<p>The Toronto Maple Leafs hired former Detroit Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde as an assistant on Craig Berube's staff, the team announced Friday.</p><p>Lalonde was fired by the Red Wings in December. Detroit had a 13-17-4 record at the time he was let go. The Red Wings went 89-86-23 under Lalonde and failed to make the playoffs in his three seasons at the helm.</p><p>The 52-year-old won two Stanley Cups as an assistant with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020 and 2021. He was on Jon Cooper's staff from 2018-22 before being hired by the Red Wings.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Lalonde is a two-time Coach of the Year in the lower ranks. He claimed the award in 2012 with the USHL's Green Bay Gamblers and in 2015 with the ECHL's Toledo Walleye.</p><p>Lane Lambert was hired by the Seattle Kraken as the team's new head coach after one season as an associate coach with the Leafs.</p><p>Assistants Marc Savard and Mike Van Ryn remain on Berube's staff from last season.</p>
