Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes consulted with NFL legend Tom Brady after tearing his ACL and LCL last year.
"I talked to Tom early in the process, because he had the same injury, a very similar injury that I had," Mahomes said Friday, according to Pete Sweeney of The Kansas City Star.
Mahomes injured his left knee during a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in mid-December. He was cleared to fully participate in practice Friday before the Chiefs' training camp begins next week.
Brady tore his ACL and MCL in the 2008 season opener and went on to win Comeback Player of the Year in 2009.
Mahomes said he also talked to former Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu and veteran tight end Zach Ertz, the latter of whom tore his ACL a week before Mahomes while playing for the Washington Commanders.
"We kind of had like competitions on where we were at, and where we were rehabbing," Mahomes said of his conversations with Ertz.
He added: "It keeps the competition going because it's a long process, and you feel like sometimes you're lonely because you're doing stuff by yourself, and you're just competing against yourself. So it gave me someone else that I can compete with to push my competitive drive."
Mahomes said Friday he's preparing to play in a preseason game before the Chiefs take on the Denver Broncos in Week 1.
The 30-year-old went 6-8 in 14 starts last season, throwing for 3,587 yards with 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. The campaign marked the first time the Chiefs missed the playoffs with Mahomes as their starting quarterback.
