Daniel Alfredsson has flipped allegiances in the longstanding Battle of Ontario.
The Ottawa Senators icon is leaving the club to join the Toronto Maple Leafs as an associate coach on Jim Hiller's staff, the Leafs announced Tuesday.
John Gruden, who recently coached the Toronto Marlies to a Calder Cup title, and Brad Werenka were also hired as assistant coaches. Mike Van Ryn and Derek Lalonde won't be returning to their roles behind the bench.
Alfredsson spent the past three seasons as an assistant with the Senators and is the organization's most accomplished player. The longtime Ottawa captain recorded 1,108 points in 1,178 games across 17 seasons with the Sens from 1995-2013.

Toronto and Ottawa met in the playoffs four times in a five-year span during Alfredsson's tenure with the Senators, with Toronto winning each series.
Although Alfredsson spent most of his career being booed by Toronto fans, he does have a connection with Maple Leafs executive Mats Sundin. The pair won gold together while representing Sweden at the 2006 Olympics.
