The Boston Red Sox placed designated hitter Masataka Yoshida on the 10-day injured list Sunday because of a left hamstring strain.
Yoshida sustained the injury during the third inning of Boston's 4-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday. The 33-year-old appeared hobbled while running to second base for a double and then limped off the field moments later. Anthony Seigler replaced him following the exit.
It's unclear how long Yoshida could be sidelined, but he noted that the last time he injured his hamstring while playing in Japan, it kept him out of action for a month.
Yoshida owns a .274 batting average with five home runs and 28 RBIs through 87 games in his fourth season with the Red Sox.
"Yeah, it's unfortunate," Yoshida said regarding the timing of the injury, according to team reporter Ian Browne.
Yoshida is expected to undergo further testing when the Red Sox return to Boston for a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks starting Monday, per ESPN.
The Red Sox also placed right-handed reliever Justin Slaten on the 15-day IL due to inflammation in his pitching elbow. He's posted a 4.60 ERA in 36 appearances this season.
Boston recalled infielder Mickey Gasper and left-handed pitcher Raymond Burgos from Triple-A Worcester in corresponding moves.
