Florida head coach Jon Sumrall named Aaron Philo the team's starting quarterback Monday, according to 247 Sports' Graham Hall.
He beat out Tramell Jones Jr. for the starting role.
Sumrall said that Philo will "get the lion's share" of first-team reps in practice ahead of the Gators' season opener against Florida Atlantic on Sept. 5.
The Georgia Tech transfer followed offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner to Gainesville this offseason. Philo served as the backup to Haynes King in his two seasons with the Yellow Jackets. He threw for 938 yards and two touchdowns while completing 57.8% of his passes in eight appearances (one start).
DJ Lagway, who started 19 games for Florida over the last two seasons, transferred to Baylor in January.
