New England Patriots wide receiver A.J. Brown suffered a high ankle sprain in the team's season-opening loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported.
Browns' X-rays came back negative, and he'll undergo an MRI on Thursday that will determine his recovery timeline, Rapoport adds.
The 29-year-old wideout was injured in the third quarter when a Seahawks defender landed on his ankle after trying to catch a low throw from quarterback Drake Maye. Brown limped off the field and spent time in the medical tent before heading to the locker room and didn't return to the game.
Wednesday night marked Brown's Patriots debut after he was acquired for a 2028 first-round pick from the Philadelphia Eagles. He finished the game with three catches for 26 yards and also drew a 34-yard pass interference penalty that set up New England's only touchdown.
Romeo Doubs also played his first game with the Patriots on Wednesday after signing a four-year contract in free agency. Doubs finished the contest with zero catches on three targets. The 26-year-old had a crucial drop in the fourth quarter, leading to a Maye interception on the next play.
New England will look to bounce back in Week 2 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
