👉 Third-place table
Tiebreakers
The top two teams from each group qualify for the knockout rounds. They'll be joined by the eight best third-place finishers to create the new round of 32.
If two or more teams in the same group are level on points after the conclusion of the group stage, the tiebreakers are as follows:
1. Head-to-head results between the teams
2. Goal difference in the games between the teams
3. Highest number of goals scored in games between the teams
4. Overall goal difference in all group games
5. Overall highest number of goals scored in the group
6. Fewest number of red or yellow cards received
7. FIFA ranking
Group A
Group complete
Mexico had already locked up top spot in the group prior to its group-stage finale Wednesday. El Tri completed a perfect 3-0-0 group stage anyway, and will play a third-place finisher from Group C, E, F, H, or I in the next round.
South Africa pulled off a sizable upset, beating South Korea 1-0 to finish second and advance to the World Cup knockouts for the first time. Bafana Bafana will play Canada in the round of 32.
The Koreans are still alive, but need help to advance as one of the best third-place teams. Czechia has been eliminated.
Group B
Group complete
Switzerland grabbed top spot - the first time the Swiss have won a World Cup group since 2006 - with a 2-1 victory over Canada on Wednesday. The co-host needed just a draw to finish first in the quartet, but Murat Yakin's veteran side took advantage of some Canadian lapses in defense in Vancouver.
Switzerland will face a third-place team from Group E, F, G, I, or J, while Canada will take on South Africa.
Bosnia and Herzegovina will advance as one of the best third-place finishers after a 3-1 win over Qatar combined with other results Wednesday. Bosnia's opponent in the round of 32 is the United States.
Group C
Group complete
Brazil took care of business with a 3-0 win against Scotland on Wednesday in Miami to secure top spot in its World Cup group yet again. Group C crosses over with Group F in the last 32, meaning Brazil will play Japan in the next round.
Morocco defeated Haiti 4-2 to clinch second place and book a date with the high-flying Netherlands in the round of 32.
Scotland now faces a very anxious wait to see if three points will be enough to advance as one of the best third-place finishers. Scotland's goal difference took a serious hit Wednesday. There's still hope for Steve Clarke's side, but the Scots' chances of advancing are hanging by a thread.
Group D
Group complete
The United States lost its group finale on Thursday, conceding a dramatic 98th-minute goal in a wild 3-2 defeat to already-eliminated Turkiye.
However, the Americans had already sealed first place in the group prior to the match, and will play Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32 on July 1.
Australia and Paraguay played out a goalless draw in the concurrent fixture, and that result was enough for the Socceroos to secure second place and move into the knockout stage.
The point should also be enough to get Paraguay into the next round as one of the best third-place teams, though that isn't mathematically confirmed yet.
Group E
Group complete
Ecuador, a pretournament dark horse, looked to be in serious danger of an early exit after Germany scored in the opening two minutes of Thursday's contest. But the South American side battled back for a 2-1 win - Gonzalo Plata poked home the decisive goal in the 77th minute - to give Sebastian Beccacece's team its first goals of the tournament and a knockout berth as one of the best third-place finishers.
Germany had already wrapped up first place in the group going into the game.
They'll both be joined in the round of 32 by the Ivory Coast. Nicolas Pepe's brace sent the Elephants to the World Cup knockout stage for the first time while also eliminating Curacao.
Germany will take on a third-place finisher from Group A, B, C, D, or F in the next round, while the Ivorians will play the second-place finisher in Group I. Ecuador, meanwhile, must wait to learn its opponent.
Group F
Group complete
The free-scoring Netherlands sealed top spot with a comfortable win over Tunisia on Thursday. The Oranje didn't exactly get rewarded for winning their group, however, as they'll meet 2022 semifinalist Morocco in the next round.
A 1-1 draw between Japan and Sweden gave the Samurai Blue second place in the group and a last-32 glamor matchup against Brazil. The Swedes will advance as a third-place finisher, but must wait to learn their opponent.
Tunisia was eliminated despite Herve Renard's efforts at a rescue mission.
Group G
How many people expected this going into the final round of group fixtures?
Belgium has flattered to deceive thus far, and needs a win against New Zealand to be sure of reaching the next round. Anything else, and the Red Devils could be one of the biggest names exiting the competition early.
Egypt is the only team with a win so far in this group. Mohamed Salah and Co. likely have enough points already to advance no matter what happens versus Iran, but the Pharaohs will want to build on their first-ever World Cup victory and top the group, which would give them the theoretical advantage of a matchup with a third-place finisher in the next round.
Whoever finishes second here will play the second-place finisher from Group D, which will be either Australia or Paraguay.
Remaining fixtures (June 26)
Egypt vs. Iran (Seattle - 11 p.m. ET)
New Zealand vs. Belgium (Vancouver - 11 p.m. ET)
Group H
A draw against Uruguay will almost certainly be enough for Spain to win Group H after La Roja's dominant victory over Saudi Arabia got the pretournament favorite back on track.
Meanwhile, Cape Verde can continue to author one of the most incredible stories in World Cup history if it can defeat the Saudis. Three points would send the Blue Sharks to the knockouts regardless of what happens between Spain and Uruguay in the concurrent fixture on Friday, and even a draw could yet be enough for second place if everything breaks their way.
That all leaves Marcelo Bielsa's team in the most perilous position.
Group H crosses over with Group J in the knockout stage, meaning the side that finishes second has the daunting task of taking on Lionel Messi and Argentina in the round of 32.
Remaining fixtures (June 26)
Cape Verde vs. Saudi Arabia (Houston - 8 p.m. ET)
Uruguay vs. Spain (Guadalajara - 8 p.m. ET)
Group I
With red-hot strikers Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland leading the way, France and Norway have already secured passage to the knockout rounds, and their clash in the group finale could be one of the most entertaining games of the opening round - just don't tell Haaland that.
France will take top spot with a draw because of its superior goal difference, and that would mean the difference between playing a third-place finisher in the round of 32 or taking on the second-place finisher from Group E.
Senegal and Iraq will both be going all out for a victory in their match, as three points for either could be enough to advance.
Remaining fixtures (June 26)
Noway vs. France (Boston - 3 p.m. ET)
Senegal vs. Iraq (Toronto - 3 p.m. ET)
Group J
Golden Boot leader and history-maker Messi has already led Argentina to the round of 32 after scoring all five of the Albiceleste's goals through two games (both wins). The reigning champion, assured of top spot in this quartet, will already be preparing for a knockout match against the second-place finisher from Group H.
Austria needs just a draw in its finale against Algeria to finish second.
Jordan has already been eliminated after two losses.
Remaining fixtures (June 27)
Jordan vs. Argentina (Dallas - 10 p.m. ET)
Algeria vs. Austria (Kansas City - 10 p.m. ET)
Group K
Colombia could upset the apple cart with a result against Portugal in a tantalizing Group K finale Saturday. A point will be enough for Los Cafeteros to relegate Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. to second place, and the reward for finishing first is a last-32 meeting with a third-place finisher from Group D, E, I, J, or L.
The second-place finisher in this group will meet whoever finishes second in Group L (England, Ghana, or Croatia).
DR Congo and Uzbekistan both need three points in their match if either one hopes to keep their World Cup campaign alive; the former will be in a very strong position to advance with a win.
Remaining fixtures (June 27)
Colombia vs. Portugal (Miami - 7:30 p.m. ET)
DR Congo vs. Uzbekistan (Atlanta - 7:30 p.m. ET)
Group L
England, not for the first time, failed to build on an encouraging tournament opener and therefore must wait to secure progression to the next round. Nevertheless, the Three Lions are still well positioned going into their final group contest against already-eliminated Panama.
Meanwhile, it's all to play for between Ghana and Croatia when they lock horns in Philadelphia. The Black Stars only need a point to secure at least second place in the group. A win for either side would actually give them first place if England drops points against Panama.
Group L could be in for a wild finale.
Remaining fixtures (June 27)
Panama vs. England (New Jersey - 5 p.m. ET)
Croatia vs. Ghana (Philadelphia - 5 p.m. ET)
Best third-place teams
The eight best third-place finishers from the group stage will advance to the knockouts. If third-place finishers across the various groups are tied on points, the tiebreakers to determine who advances are as follows:
1. Goal difference
2. Goals scored
3. Fewest number of red or yellow cards received
4. FIFA ranking
